'BAROCK THE
HOUSE' BENEFIT CONCERT IN SANTA MONICA MOBILIZES YOUNG VOTERS;
RAISES MONEY FOR BARACK OBAMA
SANTA MONICA, CA— On Monday, August 11, 2008 two local 22-year
olds will be launching the first of a bicoastal "BaRock the
House" concert series to raise money and votes for Barack Obama.
The event, to be held at the Temple Bar in Santa Monica, will
showcase five cutting-edge independent bands performing for free
to benefit Obama's candidacy.
Each band consists of politically active twenty-somethings who
have created buzz in music scenes from California to Cambridge:
80s synth-funk throwback Wallpaper; The Outline, fresh off their
tour through Europe; thoughtful electronic-alternative
collective Oliver Future; startup indie-pop group White Arrows;
and singer-songwriter Jeff Jastrow.
JohnThomas McLain and Asher Rumack
organized the event to rock n’ roll fellow twenty-somethings
into the political process. The event will mobilize young adults
through the power of music for a common cause: Obama.
"The real idea," says Rumack, "is not to reap huge profits for
the campaign, but to engage our peers in this process—to give
them a sense of power to make a real change in society. We want
to excite people about the election! The issues in this
election—social security, the job market, the dollar— will have
real, concrete consequences for our generation, so these are all
things we need to openly think and act seriously about.”
Concert attendees will make direct contributions to the Barack
Obama Campaign at the door, and have the opportunity to donate
even more inside the venue. The event will maximize its
donations by securing matching donors through pledges.
Rumack and McLain are also planning
the second “BaRock the House” for early September in New York
City, where Rumack currently works full-time as a paralegal. The
New York version will have similar goals.
McLain currently studies Public Policy and Law at Trinity
College in Hartford, CT.
Temple Bar is located at 1026 Wilshire Blvd. Santa Monica,
CA—(310) 393-6111. Doors open at 8:00 P.M.; patrons are
encouraged to arrive early.
